Though there was an era in American history when many cars struggled to achieve double-digit miles-per-gallon fuel economy, the incredible new 2020 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid has proved the future is now by achieving EPA-estimated TRIPLE-digit fuel economy of 100 MPGe combined! That sets a new fuel economy bar for mid-size SUVs, with the Escape plug-in hybrid achieving best-in-class fuel economy in addition to a solid 37 miles of range when operating solely on battery power.

Did you notice that “e” on the end of MPGe? That requires a bit of explanation. MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent, is a term used by the Environmental Protection Agency when determining the amount of energy an all-electric or hybrid vehicle like the 2020 Escape Plug-in Hybrid uses when compared to a traditional vehicle that runs on gasoline or diesel only. When the numbers were tallied, the EPA awarded the 2020 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid the coveted three-digit MPGe rating.

While all-electric cars run solely on battery power, and traditional hybrid vehicles don’t have a charging port for the battery, a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, is different in that it can be charged by either an electrical port located on the exterior body, or as you drive by the on-board gasoline engine. Charging the Escape PHEV’s battery and using it to supplement gasoline-charging is how the 2020 Escape PHEV is able to achieve those sky-high MPGe figures.

“The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer. “The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as up to four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats.”

In addition to saving you loads of money at the pump, the Escape Plug-in Hybrid saves you money on your vehicle payment every month as well, with a starting price under $35,000. It’s the latest front in Ford’s ongoing quest to drive the future of electric and hybrid vehicles; part of Ford Motor Company’s $11.5 billion dollar investment in electric vehicles.

Under the hood of the 2020 Escape Plug-in Hybrid is an all-new 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle hybrid engine generator, which feeds power to a liquid-cooled, 14.4 kilowatt-per-hour lithium ion battery located below the second row seats. Unlike other all-electric or hybrid SUVs, the 2020 Escape PHEV saves interior space and legroom with a specially designed battery that’s slimmer, lighter and more low-profile than ever before, mounted under the body so the interior of the 2020 Escape PHEV is virtually unchanged from the 2020 Escape with gasoline power. The plug-in hybrid system is available on every Escape trim level except S and SE Sport.

Drivers have several modes in which they can drive their Escape PHEV, including Auto EV mode, which allows the Escape’s sophisticated on-board computer systems to determine when to run on gas or electric power, EV Now mode, which defaults to all-electric power, and EV Later mode, which allows drivers to switch to full gas-hybrid driving to conserve batter power for electric driving later.
