If you have loads to tow and haul that even the incredible 2019 Ford F-150 can’t handle, Ford just premiered a powerful new solution: the redesigned 2020 Ford Super Duty! Packed full of styling, power and features to make even the toughest workday shorter, the 2020 Ford Super Duty is a game changer, with the highest conventional, gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing numbers in Ford’s over 100 year history. Want to buy a 2020 Ford Super Duty in Bentonville? You’ve got a bit to wait yet, as the all-new Super Duty isn’t scheduled to hit the lot at McLarty Daniel Ford until this fall. For now, read on for everything we know about the next-gen tow rig from Ford.

With all the major heavy duty truck makers bringing in big numbers, Ford knew they had to go big or go home on power train options and boy, did they.

For those who prefer gasoline power, the 2020 Ford Super Duty will feature an all-new 7.3-liter V8. While horsepower and torque numbers haven’t been released yet, Ford promises it will be the most powerful gasoline V8 in its class, with world-class durability, ease of maintenance, towing and hauling. The engine will reportedly be a cam-in-block overhead valve architecture, with a cast iron block and forged steel crankshaft for bombproof durability. Built for sustained, heavy work, the engine will feature trick techniques like variable valve timing and oil jets to cool the pistons under heavy loads.

For those who prefer the low-end torque and fuel economy of diesel, there’s the third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke. Always looking to make a great engine even more robust, Ford engineers have strengthened the cylinder head, block, connecting rods and bearings to handle higher cylinder pressures and power output. Those changes will be welcome, given the new Power Stroke’s electronic-activated variable geometry turbocharger that inproves efficiency and throttle response, and a new fuel injection system that sprays fuel up to eight times per stroke at 36,000 psi to get the ultimate power out of every drop of diesel while reducing noise levels and optimizing combustion. Ford hasn’t released power numbers on the 6.7-liter Power Stroke, but they’re bound to be considerable.

The 2020 Ford Super Duty will also offer a 6.2-liter gasoline V8 as standard power.

Any of the three available engines can be backed by the all-new 10-speed TorqShift transmission. Featuring a wider gear ratio span than the six-speed it replaces, the TorqShift 10-speed was built from a clean sheet of paper to thrive in the harshest towing conditions, and includes advanced features like line-drive power takeoff, which allows the driver to engage and operate equipment like snowplows and winches without shifting the truck into park. The transmission also features selectable drive modes that include normal, tow/haul, eco, slippery, and deep sand and snow.

“With the addition of the 7.3-liter V8, upgrades to our 6.7-liter and the debut of an all-new 10-speed transmission, we are delivering the strongest, most capable Super Duty powertrain offerings yet,” said Mike Pruitt, Ford Super Duty chief engineer.
