If you’re a fan of Ford Performance, the name “Mach 1” probably stirs some strong feelings within you. Debuted in the 1969 model year as a performance upgrade to the Mustang GT, the iconic 1969 Mustang Mach 1 became an instant icon of high-speed muscle. Once the 1970s were over, however, other than a brief return as a Mustang performance package in 2003-2004, it looked like the Mach 1 name had faded into the history books.
Ford is always full of surprises, and they recently dropped a big surprise in the laps of Mustang Performance fans: the news that the Mach 1 will be returning in the 2021 model year as a high-performance variant of America’s original pony car! With the 21st century muscle car wars in full swing, the high-performance 2021 Mustang Mach 1 is sure to set the hearts of a whole new generation of Ford fans aflutter.
“Mach 1 has always been that bridge between base Mustangs and the Shelby models,” said Ted Ryan, heritage brand manager, Ford Archives. “From a style and handling perspective, the original Mach 1 managed to stand out as unique, even in the Mustang lineup – and as the name implies, it could really move.”
Details on the new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 are few right now but if the high-perf Mustangs of recent years have been any judge, it’s going to be a show-stopper, perhaps with a big rear-deck spoiler and bold, heritage-inspired “hockey stick” stripes like the original.
“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage.”
One thing we do know is that it will be more affordable than Shelby Mustangs like the GT-350, GT-350R and GT-500. We also know that it will be powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0 V8. Given that the same 5.0-liter powers the current Mustang GT to the tune of 460 horsepower, we’re hoping further engine tweaks in the Ford Skunkworks will boost the Mach 1’s horsepower numbers to 475 hp or above. Ford is also hinting there will also be a slew of race-ready suspension tweaks. A press-release from Ford promises the Mach 1 will be “the most track-ready 5.0-liter Mustang ever.” That’s music to our ears!
