“Look, Ma, no hands!” We’ve all yelled that familiar phrase at some point in our lives. Usually, it was when we were trying to impress someone with our sick bicycle skills. You’d stick your arms up in the air and hope the handlebar steered you correctly. Unfortunately, more times than not, you ended up eating the pavement almost immediately after you uttered those famous last words. Then you really did have something to show Mom.

Who’d have thought that all those years ago, the idea of riding your bike with no hands would actually be a reality? We’re not talking about on a bike, though. We’re talking about in a car. A Ford, to be exact. Ford introduced its new hands-free highway driving technology, BlueCruise. They say you never forget how to ride a bike. Well, this isn’t a bike, and we at McLarty Daniel Ford in Bentonville, AR would like to teach you all about Ford BlueCruise. Let’s see what all this new technology can do for you.

How does BlueCruise work? It uses cameras to monitor your vehicle’s position while in a lane and applies steering support to keep your vehicle centered in the lane. With cameras and location information, BlueCruise allows you to take your hands off the steering wheel for a hands-free driving mode in certain areas. Once activated, BlueCruise uses a camera and infrared lighting to monitor your eyes and head position to detect if you are distracted. If so, it will alert you to keep your eyes on the road.

Does this all sound too good to be true? Can you imagine not having to worry about maneuvering through 5 o’clock traffic in Rogers on I-540 on your way home to Fayetteville? Or what about just putting BlueCruise on to make that drive to Eureka Springs, Siloam Springs or any other springs in Northwest Arkansas?

While BlueCruise is amazing, it doesn’t make your car self-driving. Instead, once activated, BlueCruise will alert you with a blue steering-wheel icon that means you are in a Hands-Free Blue Zone. Once you enter the zone, you can then remove your hands from the steering wheel, but you must always watch the road and be prepared to resume control of the vehicle as it does not take the place of safe driving.

Currently, Ford offers over 130,000 miles of hands-free highway driving. On Ford’s website, you can enter your starting location and destination to find Hands-Free Blue Zones along your route.

For instance, you can enter your address in Cave Springs or Tontitown and map it to your destination in Fayetteville or Gravette, and it will show you which areas of the highway are covered by BlueCruise.

But before all of this can be yours, you’ll need the Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 Prep Package, which contains the BlueCruise hardware, as well as a subscription to the BlueCruise software. We’ll be happy to help you get it set up and make sure you’re ready to enjoy all the benefits of hands-free driving.

Ford BlueCruise 1.2 is available on the 2023 Mustang Mach-E, which includes a 90-day trial with the option to purchase a three-year connected service plan with regular map updates. This requires the FordPass App and model activation. BlueCruise is also available in the F-150, F-150 Lightning and the Expedition.
