The first thing to talk about with the 2021 Ford Bronco is the incredible new look. The family resemblance to the first-generation Bronco built between 1966 and 1977 is unmistakable, though the ’21 Bronco kicks that boxy shape way, way up with features that grandpa could have only dreamed of. The four-door models, by the way, are the first four-door Broncos EVER, allowing the whole family to get in on the off-roading fun with more space for people and gear.
“We created the Bronco family to elevate every aspect of off-road adventure and equipped them with class-leading chassis hardware and exclusive technologies to raise the bar in the rugged 4×4 segment and take people further into the wild,” said Jim Farley, Ford chief operating officer. “They’re built with the toughness of an F-Series truck and performance spirit of Mustang – and come wrapped in one of the most stunning and functional off-road designs that’s true to the original Bronco design DNA.”
Both Bronco two-door and four-door models feature a hard-top roof and doors that are quickly removable for open-air tun. Two-doors feature a three-section roof, while four door models have four removable roof sections. All are lightweight and can be easily removed by one person. They stow safely inside. Don’t want to take the top all the way off by want more fresh air? The rear quarter windows are also quickly removable. Also available is a cloth soft-top that’s standard on four-door models. Can’t decide? The cloth and hardtop options can both be included on your four-door Bronco. Class-exclusive frameless doors make them easier to remove, less bulky to carry, and take up less room while being storred.
Out front is a futuristic grille and headlights that are both new and simultaneously familiar, with round LED headlights and a light-up grille script. Knowing that Bronco owners are likely going to do some off-road adventuring, the “trail sights” on the leading edge of the front fenders also can be used as strong tie-downs, each with a 150-pound capacity for securing rooftop items like kayaks and canoes.
So yeah, it looks incredible, but how does it perform? From the Ranger 4×4 to the Super Duty Tremor to the F-150 Raptor, Ford has been building a reputation for modern, world-class off-roaders over the past decade, and the 2021 Ford Bronco takes its place among them with a drivetrain that is built Ford Tough to take on any terrain.
“Bronco’s advanced four-wheel-drive technology is at the core of its off-road capabilities, and at the heart of it all is Bronco’s exclusive Terrain Management System™ with G.O.A.T. Modes™ that is designed to help drivers better navigate any type of terrain,” said Mark Grueber, Bronco consumer marketing manager.
Two 4×4 systems will be available on the Bronco: a base set-up and an “advanced” 4×4 drivetrain for those who want the most out of their drive off-road. The advanced system features a two-speed transfer case sending torque to a Dana 44 AdvanTEK solid rear axle and Dana AdvanTEK independent front differential unit. Inside, Performa-TraK™ electronic locking differentials by legendary off-road gear supplier Spicer provide improved traction over rough terrain. Giving that rugged hardware a high-tech assist are up to seven driver-selectable modes that optimize drivetrain systems to match the conditions, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Sand, Baja, Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl. In addition, an available segment-first Trail Toolbox gives Bronco owners access to exclusive Ford-first technologies, including Trail Control and the innovative Trail One-Pedal Drive acceleration/braking control, which takes some of the juggling out of slow rock-crawling.
Helping keep you sunny side up in the new Bronco is best-in-class 11.6-inch ground clearance, a maximum 29-degree breakover angle and 37.2-degree departure angle, plus best-in-class water-fording of up to 33.5 inches! Frame mounted tow-hooks let you help out lesser 4x4s stuck on the trail, while available heavy-duty modular steel bumpers feature an integrated Ford Performance winch mount. Protecting critical components is the most advanced system of skid plates and bash shields ever installed on a Ford from the factor, with the available front plate and shielding for the engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank. Heavy-duty full-length rock-rails keep your door sills looking shiny, no matter what the trail brings your way, and available 35-inch off-road tires give you that Tonka Toy look while helping Bronco claw its way out of anything.
“Bronco two- and four-door models leverage the company’s Built Ford Tough durability and performance testing and take it even further off-road with Built Wild Extreme Durability Testing in the harshest possible environments, including the brutal trails of the King of the Hammers off-road competition,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford enterprise product line management, Icons.
Now we know you’re asking: Which engines does the 2021 Ford Bronco have? Ford brings it with the available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which is projected to produce 310 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque, while the standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost is targeted to deliver best-in-class four-cylinder torque of 310 lb.-ft. with an expected 270 horsepower. Like throwing shifts? The Bronco has you covered with a segment-first 7-speed manual transmission, or you can let the machine do the work with the available SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission, offering a maximum 67.8:1 crawl ratio with the available advanced 4×4 transfer case.
The all-new 2021 Ford Bronco will be built at the historic Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan, with a starting price for the two-door at $29,995. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2021.
