Ford unveils 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R ‘ McLarty Daniel Ford of Bentonville

For fans of Ford performance, few words in the English language can get their blood pumping like “Shelby.” Since 1966, the name bestowed on Ford Mustangs by race car builder, racer and innovator Carroll Shelby has meant driving excitement and no-compromises high performance. Now, Ford is adding another great name to that long go-fast legacy with the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R. A race-ready variant of the incredible Mustang Shelby GT350, the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R is sure to have Ford fans raring to go.

Many of the enhancements and upgrades to the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R are thanks to the development of Ford’s incredible 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, the 700-horsepower-plus supercar unveiled earlier this year. Where the GT500 gets the job done through brute force, the GT350R is a more subtle road-racing machine, built around upgraded suspension geometry for quicker steering and tighter handling through the corners. Ford Performance worked their magic on the front and rear suspension of the GT350R, adding a high-trail steering knuckle, an all-new steering rack and recalibrated electric power steering controller.

“It’s always been our plan to take the latest innovations from the GT500 program and strategically apply them across the Mustang lineup,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. “These latest updates to the GT350R keep its performance competitive and on the top if its game, whether that’s on the track or on the street.”

Shaving weight off a race car is always a good idea, and Ford put the GT350R on a serious diet, deleting the rear seat, adding super lightweight carbon-fiber wheels, and nixing the factory exhaust resonators. Downforce and aerodynamics are helped by a larger front splitter and a large rear wing. Exterior touches include red brake calipers, red pin-striping along the edge of the bold rally stripes, Shelby GT350R badges and a leather interior with high-contrast red stitching. Customers can also order their GT350R with a 12 speaker sound system by B&O, voice activated navigation and more.
