RoadTrip

Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, a lot of us will wind up making a long-haul road trip at some point in 2020. After the excitement of the journey wears off, you’ll find you have a lot of hours to fill as the miles roll by. One lifesaver for road-trippers in recent years has been the rise of modern podcasts. Basically, they’re audio stories that are told either in one or multiple episodes, with topics ranging from cooking to music to relationships and everything in between.

One of our favorite podcast genres is True Crime stories, especially those that take a deep and enlightening dive into the forces and motives of the criminals and the cutting-edge methods and insight it took to catch them. There’s a ton of them out there, but you really have to do some research to separate the truly great from those that are just so-so.

Luckily for you, a lot of us here at McLarty Daniel Ford of Bentonville are podcast fans, and we’ve got some great suggestions for True Crime podcasts that will really cut your next roadtrip down to size. Check them out below. And if you need a great new or reliable pre-owned car to get you there in comfort and style, stop in at McLarty Daniel Ford of Bentonville today, or check out our full selection on our website right now.

DIRTY JOHN — To well-off divorcee Debra Newell, John Meehan seemed to be the man she had always been looking for: good looking, charming, romantic, attentive, an anesthesiologist who swept the Southern California-based interior designer off her feet from pretty much the moment they met through an online dating site. Even though Newell’s daughters urged her to be cautious, within weeks, their whirlwind romance led to a quick marriage. As you might have guessed given that they made an eight-part podcast (and now a Netflix series) about their relationship, from there, Meehan and Newell’s marriage soon spiraled into a nightmare of lies, deceit, addiction and fraud as Meehan’s true backstory became known bit by disturbing bit. Eventually, it all culminated in a terrifying moment that you’ll never see coming. Hosted by L.A. Times journalist Christopher Goffard, who reported extensively on the case, “Dirty John” goes deep into the story of Meehan and Newell, ferreting out previously unknown details about the conman who wormed his way into an unsuspecting woman’s life through her heart. It’s a must-listen for true crime fans, and the ultimate affirmation of the old saying: “Marry in haste, repent in leisure.”

SWINDLED — Another very old, very wise saying holds that money is the root of all evil. Those out to get money from others by any means necessary can go to some truly dastardly and devious lengths to do so, and once they’re caught, unwinding those tangled webs of lies, machinations and schemes can make for some very entertaining listening. “Swindled” is a podcast devoted to seeking out and telling the stories of some of the most shameless and audacious grifters the world has ever known. Hosted by an unnamed “Concerned Citizen,” whose deadpan delivery and wry humor takes some getting used to, each episode usually includes details of two swindles in the same vein, connected by a common thread. There’s currently 12 full-length episodes of “Swindled” available online, and the topics run the gamut of human failings, including a sea captain who went on the run after discovering one of the richest sunken treasures in history, a mortician who used her knowledge of death to defraud insurance companies for a fortune, the true story of the Love Canal industrial contamination that poisoned an entire neighborhood, the life and mysterious death of Oklahoma nuclear whistleblower Karen Silkwood, the disturbing crimes of convicted boy band mogul Lou Perlman, the great McDonald’s Monopoly scam and scandal of the 1990s and more.

THE DROPOUT — Few tech gurus have had a more meteoric rise and dazzling fall in recent years than Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Beautiful and brilliant, Holmes seemed like she was a shoo-in for the tech sector’s Next Big Thing in the 2010s, when her Silicon Valley startup Theranos started generating huge buzz — and equally huge checks from investors — after Holmes announced the company was on the brink of revolutionizing medicine through a tabletop device called Edison that could diagnose hundreds of illnesses and genetic conditions in minutes, using only a single drop of a patient’s blood. Holmes eventually inked a groundbreaking partnership with the drug store chain Walgreens that helped make her the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world. All the while, Holmes was selling her investors and the public on the idea that Edison would soon do for medical testing what the iPhone did for communication. The truth, however, was that the company was built on a tissue of lies, with engineers struggling to make Edison work as promised and an increasingly-desperate Holmes going to ever-more elaborate lengths to keep those demanding results at bay. Eventually, the house of cards came tumbling down. This six-episode podcast is a riveting exploration not only of Holmes and Theranos, but also the resilience of the American Dream in the startup era.

Any one of these great true-crime podcasts will help you knock your next road trip down to size, and you might even find yourself a podcast addict like a lot of us! Need a beautiful new Ford or Lincoln to get you there? How about a reliable pre-owned vehicle with plenty of miles left to give? 2020 Ford Ranger

Anyone who has ever owned a four-wheel drive vehicle and used it to its fullest potential knows how much fun off-roading can be, and there’s no better place to get off the beaten path than right here in Northwest Arkansas. From the Ford F-150 FX4 to the luxurious 2020 Ford Expedition Limited FX4 to the race-ready Ford F-150 Raptor, Ford builds some of the toughest off-roaders in the business.

Up until now, there has been a problem, though: with the advent of smartphone and in-vehicle navigation systems, a lot of us folded our paper maps and dropped our compass in the junk drawer for good a few years back, relying on helpful gadgets to provide turn-by-turn directions to and from even the most far-flung destinations on the pavement? The issue is: once you decide to leave the pavement behind and venture out to where adventure really begins, all that fancy technology doesn’t help much and you’re at the mercy of local landmarks and your own memory to get you back to civilization again.

Always at the forefront of making driving safer, more adventurous and more fun, Ford Motor Company has come up with a solution, making finding your way home when off-roading as easy as following a Breadcrumb trail.

When enabled in the SYNC 3 navigation settings found on most late-model Ford vehicles, including the Ford Ranger and F-150, the all-new Breadcrumbs feature drops a virtual pin every second when you’re driving off road. Utilizing satellite navigation similar to that employed by the U.S. Armed Forces, the system creates a trail that provides an exact record of when and where you turned while winding through the wilderness. When you’re ready to head back, just push a button on the SYNC 3 touchscreen and Breadcrumbs reverses the trail, giving you an easy-to-follow path all the way back to where you began, without the stress of remembering landmarks or reading a map.

The Breadcrumbs system is the perfect companion to the adventure-ready 2020 Ford Ranger 4×4, which — new for this year — can be equipped with the FX4 Off-Road Package. Making a great truck even tougher and more capable, the 2020 Ford Ranger FX4 includes an electronic locking rear differential, plus Terrain Management with Trail Control, which makes optimizing your Ranger’s engine and drivetrain systems as easy as twisting a dial. For even more capability, Ford Performance now offers a full range of accessories built specifically for Ford Ranger, including off-road items like a winch-ready steel front bumper and lift-and-level kits that are a simple bolt on.

McLarty Daniel Ford of Bentonville is all about off-roading, and we can put you behind the wheel of a Ford Tough 4×4 today! Stop in for a test drive of the rugged 2020 Ford F-150, 2020 Ford Raptor or the incredible new 2020 Ranger 4×4 today!

coffee

Stopping in at McDonald’s for that morning cup of coffee is part of the daily routine of millions of Americans. Now, Ford Motor Company and McDonald’s have paired up to turn a byproduct of your morning joe into parts that will soon go into millions of Ford production cars.

McDonald’s serves up tens of millions of cups of coffee every year, and that means roasting tens of millions of pounds of coffee beans. A byproduct of coffee roasting is coffee chaff, the dried skin of the bean, which usually drops off during the roasting process and is discarded. Always looking for new ways to reduce waste that might end up in landfills, Ford recently developed a process that converts the coffee bean chaff, when mixed with other additives, into pellets that can be molded into sturdy plastic car parts, including headlamp and taillight housings and more.

Ford says the resulting parts are about 20 percent lighter than conventional plastic components, and take 25 percent less energy to produce, while still meeting Ford’s rigorous standards.

“McDonald’s commitment to innovation was impressive to us and matched our own forward-thinking vision and action for sustainability,” said Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader, sustainability and emerging materials research team. “This has been a priority for Ford for over 20 years, and this is an example of jump starting the closed-loop economy, where different industries work together and exchange materials that otherwise would be side or waste products.”

McDonald’s has pledged to divert a significant portion of their yearly coffee chaff waste to Ford, so it can be turned into high-quality car parts.

“Like McDonald’s, Ford is committed to minimizing waste and we’re always looking for innovative ways to further that goal,” said Ian Olson, senior director, global sustainability, McDonald’s. “By finding a way to use coffee chaff as a resource, we are elevating how companies together can increase participation in the closed-loop economy.”

This collaboration by auto giant Ford and fast food giant McDonald’s is the latest innovative collaboration by the companies, aimed at building a cleaner and more sustainable future. Ford has long been on the cutting edge of sustainable production techniques, including prototype plastic car parts produced from corn that were developed by Ford founder Henry Ford before World War II.

Ford is working in partnership with supplier Varroc Lighting Systems, which produces a variety of headlamp assemblies for the company, to develop the coffee-based plastic assemblies. McDonald’s meanwhile, is working to meet the goal of sourcing 100 percent of their packaging from recycled, renewable or sustainable sources by 2025.

From the incredible 2021 Mustang Mach E all-electric SUV to headlight assemblies made from a restaurant byproduct that would otherwise be thrown away, Ford’s commitment to building a more sustainable future is one more reason McLarty Daniel Ford of Bentonville is proud to sell quality Ford cars, trucks and SUVs. Since the days when hot rodders were hopping up the legendary Flathead Ford V8, through the muscle car era when the Super Cobra Jet and Boss 302 Mustangs roared, to today’s high performance Ford cars, trucks and SUVs, Ford has been known for groundbreaking engine design that is the foundation of unbeatable performance.

That long heritage of building groundbreaking engines continues today, and critics are taking notice, with the influential automotive publication Wards including two revolutionary Ford engines to their Top 10 Engines of 2019 List, with the legendary 5.0-liter Dual-Overhead Cam V8 from the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Edition sharing the honor with the all-new 3.0-liter Power Stoke turbo-diesel V6 available in the 2019 Ford F-150.

It’s the 25th anniversary of the Top 10 Engines of the Year list for Wards, a century-old publication that has been reviewing and critiquing automobile design and engineering since the days when Ford Model T cars were still rolling off the assembly line. Editors with Wards Auto chose the winners after evaluating 34 engines and hybrid powertrain systems in both laboratory settings and through extensive real-world road testing. It’s the second year in a row that Ford has had two engines on the list. The 5.0-liter V8 is the first eight-cylinder engine to make the cut since 2015.

In a press release announcing this year’s Top 10 winners, the staff of Wards Auto singled out the 480-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 in the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Edition, saying that while the Bullitt — which benefits from a wider throttle body shared with the 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and active exhaust — only gains 20 horsepower over the same engine in the 2019 Ford Mustang GT, “the pitch-perfect version in the Bullitt makes us smile every time we punch the throttle,” with the editors at Wards going on it say, “The Bullitt [Mustang] demonstrates how small changes and careful attention to tuning can bring new life to mature technology and create a whole new level of firepower.”

The Wards editors also had plentiful praise for the 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel V6 available in the 2019 Ford F-150, singling out the engine for its smooth and quiet operation and remarkable fuel economy. Introduced in the 2018 Ford F-150, the new, smaller Power Stroke V6 may be smaller than other diesels in the Ford lineup, but it goes big on torque — specifically, a whopping 440 lb.-ft. of torque, enabling maximum towing of up to 11,400 pounds and maximum hauling of up to 2,020 pounds. Wards lauded the 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 for its compacted graphite-iron block — the same high-tech material used on big-brother Power Stroke diesels in heavy duty F-series trucks — and fuel-sipping direct injection system. “What clinches it for the Wards judges,” the publication wrote in their release, “is the 26 miles per gallon we observed while logging about 800 miles in an F-150 SuperCrew 4×3. That’s the best fuel economy we’ve ever seen in a fullsize pickup.”

It’s two more awards for the already crowded trophy case at Ford, and another feather in the cap of America’s best selling muscle car — the 2019 Ford Mustang — and the best-selling full-size truck for 41 years straight: the Ford F-150!

Want to see what all the fuss is about? Then come see us at McLarty Daniel Ford in Bentonville, where you can test drive both the 2019 Ford Mustang and the 2019 Ford F-150. And from all of us here at McLarty Daniel Ford: have a very Merry Christmas.

  1. “Blue Christmas” by Elvis Presley — Doye O’Dell first recorded “Blue Christmas” back in 1948, but Elvis made it his own in 1957 with a soolful version that really captured the song’s melancholy tone. Cheerful, it ain’t, but it is definitely a Christmas classic by The King.
  2. “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon — Written by John Lennon and the much-maligned Yoko Ono to help celebrate the first Christmas after the end of the long and bloody Vietnam War, “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” perfectly captures the spirit of the holidays and spending time with “the near and the dear ones” even when some are unable to be there.
  3. “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey — Few artists are as associated with the 1990s as high-pitched songbird Mariah Carey, and Christmas just doesn’t get any better than this standout tune Carey wrote with producer Walter Afanasieff for her then-husband Tommy Mattola. While Carey’s marriage to Mattola didn’t last, this song sure did.
  4. “Little Saint Nick” by the Beach Boys — Building on hotrod Beach Boys hits like “Little Deuce Coupe” and “409,” this 1963 holiday song reimagines Santa’s Sleigh as a tricked out show car, candy apple red with a four-speed stick, fueled by pure Christmas joy.
  5. “Wonderful Christmas” by Paul McCartney — Built upon the simple, earworm hook of “Simply having a wonderful Christmastime,” this song by the second post-Beatles member of the Fab Four on our list is pure fun, and infinitely singable in the car.
  6. “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms — While almost everyone has heard this now-classic 1957 hit, few these days remember the man behind the original: Bobby Helms. Pure cheer and joy, the song always sets the perfect mood, and has since been recut by a ton of great artists, including Hall & Oates, George Strait, and Blake Shelton.
  7. Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by Bruce Springsteen — Bruce Springsteen needs no introduction, and he showed why at a December 12, 1975 show in Greenvale, New York where he and the E Street Band belted out one of the all-time great renditions of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Luckily for all of us, the show was being recorded for posterity, preserving the pure joy of Springsteen’s take on an iconic classic.
  8. “Run, Run Rudolph” by Chuck Berry — Rock and Roll just doesn’t get any better than Chuck Berry, and when he turned his iconic guitar work and knack for lyrics toward the holidays in 1958, the result was this instant Christmas classic. Featured in many, many films, including the airport run in “Home Alone,” it’s since been covered by everyone from The Rolling Stones to The Grateful Dead.

Featuring everything from replacement parts to apparel, Ford plans to add dozens more items to the store in coming months to help build excitement for the launch of the 2020 Bronco.

Ford has been torturing us by releasing little details about the 2020 Ford Bronco for months now, including a single photo showing the tarped prototype in profile. Even that teaser reveals a shape that’s bound to be pretty impressive: a boxy, short-wheelbase shape with a rear-mounted full-size spare, a squared-off front fascia, and an unmistakable resemblance to the iconic first-generation Bronco models built between 1965 and 1977. Ford has since further revealed that the production model will feature easily-removable doors and hardtop for full-on open air fun in the sun, a trait also shared by the first-gen Broncos.

Ford’s official Amazon.com Bronco Store debuted on December 2, A.K.A. “Cyber Monday.” The store is already stocked with a broad range of Bronco-themed items, including t-shirts, metal signs, phone cases, pet items, drinking glasses, vinyl stickers and magnets, baseball caps, die-cast Bronco toys, and more. If you or someone you love is restoring a first-generation Bronco and tired of fighting the rust monster, there are even Ford Motor Company-approved reproduction parts including full grilles and quarter panels, emblems, and more from world-class Bronco restorer Dennis Carpenter.

“The Bronco fan base is such a loyal one, and they love their Bronco gear,” said Casie Ocan͂a, Ford global brand licensing manager, brand & integrated marketing. “It’s great to be able to corral this merchandise and make it available and easy to buy at one site.”

In a press release announcing the store, Ford said that in coming months, the store will become the exclusive online home for items featuring the Ford Bronco R race prototype. Build to race in the punishing SCORE-International Baja 1000 in Mexico and featuring a design that hints at the final shape of the 2020 Bronco that will be unveiled next spring, the Bronco R is both an incredible machine and a rolling test bed where Ford engineers are developing the rugged chassis and drivetrain components that will go into the production-model 2020 Bronco.

birds eye view of all electric Mustang

A future where electric cars outnumber gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles by a significant margin is coming soon to a driveway, highway and parking lot near you, and a recent joint project by Ford Motor Company and electric vehicle outfitter Webasto shows it doesn’t have to be all about jellybean shapes and sluggish performance.

Built for this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, the Mustang Lithium concept car is an ultra-high-performance, all electric Mustang that showcases the incredible torque and acceleration the latest generation of electric battery packs and motors can deliver, with the car packing an incredible 1,000 lb.-ft of torque and more than 900 horsepower.

“Ford has made no secret of the fact that we are electrifying our most popular nameplates,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s Chief Product Development and Purchasing Officer. “This one-off Mustang prototype is a great opportunity for us, together with Webasto, to showcase to our customers what a new electrified powertrains can do for performance in a car they already know and love.”

Building out from the sleek and familiar shape of the 2020 Ford Mustang, the designers and engineers of the Mustang Lithium played up the Mustang’s classic looks for a more sustainable future. Lowered one inch under stock, the Mustang sits on 20-inch forged wheels in staggered widths for an aggressive, hot rod stance. Under the hood, things get decidedly more futuristic, thanks to a Phi-Power dual-core electric motor with dual power inverters, drawing juice from an 800-volt Webasto battery system with EVDrive Technology, delivering a full mega-watt of electrical energy on demand. That’s almost twice the voltage of most electric cars, allowing the Mustang Lithium’s system to be lighter, more powerful and run cooler than most electric vehicles.

Backing the high-tech power plant is a tried-and-true Getrag MT82 six-speed manual transmission that has been upgraded to all-billet components to help handle the incredible torque delivered by the electric motors. Out back, a high-performance rear-end is similarly beefy, with Ford Performance half-shaft axles, and a 8.8-inch Torsen differential.

Helping the Mustang Lithium stick to the curves are competition-grade tires, and Ford Performance’s Track Handling Pack with strut tower brace. Bringing the halt are Brembo six-piston front brakes lifted from the incredible Mustang Shelby GT350R.

“Very similar to Ford’s push for vehicle electrification, this is an innovative way to further the technologies we’re developing to enable vehicle electrification while creating a vision of how cool the future of electric performance will be,” said Mark Denny, Webasto Customized Solutions North America President and CEO.

We don’t know about you, but if the Mustang Lithium concept represents the future of electric vehicles, count us in! It’s one more example of Ford Motor Company’s commitment to building the vehicles of tomorrow, and helping drivers find a more sustainable future. customer holding a phone displaying the FordPass mobile app

The future is now, and one of the incredible ways that has manifested itself when it comes to vehicles in recent years is the ability to lock, unlock, remote-start your vehicle and more, from anywhere on the planet, right from your smartphone. While other manufacturers see these handy smartphone integration features as a way to make a buck, charging as much as $14.99 per month to access the service, Ford recently announced that they’re making their FordPass smartphone remote system, powered by FordPass Connect, free brand-wide on any new vehicle purchased.

Introduced in 2016, FordPass is a mobile app that can do it all for your Ford vehicle, including allowing you to start, stop and unlock your car, schedule maintenance, remotely chat with Ford service advisors and more. FordPass currently has more than 1.5 million active users. The app can be downloaded for free through Google Play or the App Store.

Though Ford previously charged a monthly fee for FordPass service through one, two or five-year subscriptions, Ford has made FordPass free on vehicles equipped with FordPass Connect, effective immediately. GMC and Chevrolet require customers to pay over $14 a month to access their OnStar system after a three-month trial period, while Toyota charges $8 per month for access to their similar system.

“This approach truly sets us apart in the industry,” says Jason Sprawka, director, customer experience manager. “We know that keeping our customers connected and engaged is key to building a deeper relationship with them.”

It’s Ford’s next step in creating the vehicles of tomorrow, with the features, innovation and connections that customers demand from today’s vehicles.

“When customer experience is consistently done correctly it increases loyalty,” said Kari Novatney, and engineer with FordPass. “We think it’s important for our customers to have the ability to conveniently and safely access their vehicle from the FordPass app anyplace and anytime.”

Ford’s constant push for technological innovation and finding ways to reward Ford drivers is yet another reason why we’re excited to sell quality Ford vehicles here at McLarty Daniel Ford.
